A memorial service for Michael Jackson will be held Tuesday at Los Angeles' Staples Center, CBS News has learned.

The news came following a day of discussions between L.A. police and officials and the Jackson family. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Nokia Theater were also considered.

It wasn't immediately clear if a funeral or a public memorial was being discussed for the entertainer - or both. No further details about the timing of the event or how members of the public might attend have been announced.

Jermaine Jackson confirmed the service would be at the Staples Center at 10 a.m. Tuesday, one in a series of events that would commemorate Michael Jackson.

"We hoping everybody will be safe and things locked down," Jackson said to CNN's Larry King, referring to pulling together the Staples Center event in such a short time.

Jermaine Jackson hopes that his brother can be buried at the Neverland Ranch, near the train station on the 2,500-acre property near Santa Barbara, Calif. He seemed confident that legal measures that prevent burial at Neverland could be overcome.

"There is no place big enough," Jermaine Jackson said regarding the funeral service. "The Washington Monument, [the Los Angeles] coliseum. We want the world to take part in this event. At the same time we are in mourning. This is the most incredible being there will ever be."

A statement released by Ken Sunshine, a family spokesperson, said that 11,000 tickets would be made available to the public, but specifics on how those tickets are to be distributed will be released Friday.

Before his death Michael Jackson had been rehearsing at the Staples Center, home of the Los Angeles Lakers, for 50 sold-out shows he was planning to put on in London. Today, the promoters released footage of Jackson's final rehearsal and in it he looks ready to make a comeback, reports CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy.

An effort to bury Michael Jackson at Neverland Ranch has fizzled and it appears more likely a funeral and burial will take place in Los Angeles, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Authorities in Santa Barbara County had been preparing for tens of thousands of fans to descend on the 2,500-acre ranch after media reports that a public viewing would take place later this week.

But the person, who is not authorized to speak for the family and requested anonymity, said nothing is planned for Neverland at least through Friday.

The person said it appears more likely a funeral and burial will take place in Los Angeles. The family has the final say.

A private memorial service for family and friends could take place at the ranch, most likely after the funeral.

The person said billionaire Thomas Barrack, who owns Neverland in a joint venture with Jackson, sought an exemption to bury the singer at the ranch. But the person says it's a complicated process and it couldn't be done for a burial this week.

"The family is aware a Neverland burial is not possible. They are expected to make decisions about whatever funeral and memorial service" will take place, the source said.

It was not possible to rule out that Jackson's body might return to the ranch, either for the private service or a burial sometime in the future, if the family can get the go-ahead from state and local officials.

Asked about the possibility that Jackson could be cremated and the remains brought to the ranch, the person said, "That's not the plan."

The family would need to get permission from local land-use officials to bury Jackson on private property, then submit an application and paperwork with the state Cemetery and Funeral Bureau.

The state application would then need to be approved by the funeral board, a process that could take anywhere from seven to 30 days.

Kim Brown, a spokeswoman for the Department of Consumer Affairs, could not confirm any application had been filed by Jackson family representatives unless the certificate had been approved.

Heavy construction equipment and workers were seen passing through the wrought-iron gates of Neverland on Tuesday. The property is about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

At once a symbol of Jackson's success and excesses, Neverland -- nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara County's wine country -- became the site of a makeshift memorial after his death Thursday.

Jackson's internment at Neverland would create a sort of Graceland West, recalling the final resting place of Elvis Presley, who was buried on a tranquil knob of land near a Grecian-style temple on the grounds of his 13 1/2-acre estate in Memphis, Tenn.

Presley died Aug. 16, 1977, at age 42 and was entombed two days later at Forest Hill Cemetery, about three miles north of Graceland. Due to security concerns at the cemetery, an application to transfer his body was filed about three weeks later and approved by the Memphis Shelby County Board of Adjustment.

Michael Jackson wanted music legend Diana Ross to care for his three children in the event his mother was unable to act as guardian, according to a will he signed seven years ago.

The 2002 document was filed Wednesday morning in L.A. Superior Court by John Branca, the performer's longtime entertainment attorney and advisor. The will appoints Branca and a music executive and family friend, John McClain, as executors of the estate.

A third executor, Barry Siegel, resigned from consideration in 2003, according to a statement released by Branca's representatives. Lawyers for Jackson's parents have said they obtained a copy of the July 2002 will Tuesday and are reviewing its validity.

The will bears Jackson's signature and many paragraphs of the five-page document are initialed "MJ."

In a statement, Branca and McClain said, "The most important element of

Michael's will is his unwavering desire that his mother, Katherine, become

the legal guardian for his three children. As we work to carry out Michael's

instructions to safeguard both the future of his children as well as the

remarkable legacy he left us as an artist we ask that all matters involving his

estate be handled with the dignity and the respect that Michael and his

family deserve."

Branca began representing Jackson when the entertainer was 21 and guided him through the most successful period of his life, including the release of "Thriller" and his purchase of rights to a music catalog that includes the work of the Beatles and was Jackson's biggest asset.

McClain is one of the founders of Interscope Records and according to the executors' statement, has a 40-year relationship with the Jackson family. The will directs that all of Jackson's assets be put in an entity called the Michael Jackson Family Trust.

CNN reports that Michael Jackson's body is being taken to Neverland Ranch in California's Santa Barbara County for public viewing on Friday. A private memorial service is scheduled for Sunday. It is still not known where Jackson will be buried. Gary, Ind. Mayor Rudy Clay says he has been in touch with the Jackson family and that he believes the singer's body will rest in his hometown of Gary.

Updated at 3:15 p.m.: Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times.]

[Updated at 2:46 p.m.: Jackson is in a coma and his family is arriving at his bedside, a law enforcement source told The Times.

Jackson was rushed to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center this afternoon by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a call at Jackson's home at 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and took him to the hospital, Ruda told The Times.

[Updated at 2:12 p.m.: Paramedics were called to a home in the 100 block of Carolwood Drive off Sunset Boulevard. Jackson had rented the Bel-Air home for $100,000 a month. It was described as a French chateau estate built in 2002 with seven bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 12 fireplaces and a theater.

The home is about 2 1/2 miles, about a six-minute drive, from UCLA Medical Center. An earlier version of this post incorrectly described the time to travel between the home and hospital as two minutes.]

The news comes as Jackson, 50, was attempting a comeback after years of tabloid headlines, most notably his trial and acquittal on child molestation charges.

In May, The Times reported that Jackson had rented the Bel-Air residence and was rehearsing for a series of 50 sold-out shows in London's O2 Arena. Jackson had won the backing of two billionaires to get the so-called "King of Pop" back on stage.

His backers envision the shows at AEG's O2 as an audition for a career rebirth that could ultimately encompass a three-year world tour, a new album, movies, a Graceland-like museum, musical revues in Las Vegas and Macau, and even a "Thriller" casino. Such a rebound could wipe out Jackson's massive debt.

or at least that's what the word is. What is Jermaine going to do about that big tattoo of Janet he just had put on his side? LOL!

Music impressario and Atlanta native Jermaine Dupri and singer Janet Jackson are reportedly splitting.

The National Enquirer says Jackson and Dupri, who have been together for four years and were reportedly pondering marriage, began battling over her recent tour -- managed by Dupri -- which was a dismal failure, with a string of canceled concerts due to poor ticket sales.

The Enquirer, citing unnamed sources, said the fading superstar, 36, has moved out of Dupri's Los Angeles home.

"Janet and Jermaine finally hit a wall," the source was quoted as saying. "They were fighting over his management of her career. In the end, she decided to make a break."

Whatever their future, Dupri won't be able to easily forget Jackson. The owner of Atlanta's So So Def records recently revealed he has Jackson's image -- her hands clasped prayer-like, head covered in a Madonna-esque pose -- tatooed along his lower right side, from chest to waistband.

Jackson's career has been in rapid decline since her debacle at the 2004 Super Bowl, where she exposed her breast during the halftime show.

Her 2008 album, "Discipline," sold just over 440,000 copies, a far cry from her debut album in 1993, which sold over 7 million.

Morgan Freeman, 72, and his wife of 25 years, Myrna Colley-Lee are in the middle of a bitter divorce. And reports are starting to emerge on the Web of an alleged decade-long affair with ... his step-granddaughter.

E'Dena HInes is the granddaughter of Morgan's first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, but was raised by Morgan and Myrna.

"Myrna said E'dena told her that when she was a teenager, she and Morgan went to dinner at a friend's house one evening. Both had been drinking and when they returned home Morgan attempted to have sex with her. They stopped just short of having intercourse," a close family insider told The Enquirer.

Myrna confronted Morgan about the incident, but the undercover relationship continued and escalated.

E'Dena has been Morgan's escort to several Hollywood events, including the premiere of "The Dark Knight."

Freeman's rep has no comment, e-mailing us: "No comment on anything in The Enquirer."

Does this remind anyone else of that creepy Woody Allen-Soon Yi affair?

Sade Adu, the reclusive "quiet storm" soul signer who takes notoriously long breaks between releases, has regrouped with the band that bears her name and is recording her first album of new material since 2000's "Lovers Rock," Billboard.com sources confirm. The group is in the studio through June and Sony hopes to put the record out by the end of 2009 though, despite rumors, there is no set release date on the calendar.

"She is in the studio and the album will come when it is ready," a source at Sony tells Billboard. "You don't wait for years for one and then rush it."

Sade's longtime bandmate Stuart Matthewman, a.k.a. Cottonbelly, also confirms that new material is in progress, though he says the project is still in its "early days" and won't be close to finished until "later in the year."

Last week, rumors of a new Sade album surfaced when the official-looking website sade2009.com went live with a message claiming a release date of November 24, 2009 for a new album. However, the source at Sade's label denies any connection to that site. "We do not know where that fan site could have got that release date from, but it is 100% not true." Billboard contacted the site's owner and web developer, who insisted that the release date was "official;" since his response, however, the site's posting has been updated with a correction: "The date above has been changed, a representative from Sony confirmed the new date to be unknown. Please check back for the update on Sade's album release."

Though no details about Sade's new music have yet been revealed, one artist may have already heard snippets: Maxwell, a fellow Sony recording artist and longtime friend and collaborator with Matthewman, who will soon release a new record of his own ("BLACKsummer'snight," July 7) after a multi-year hiatus. The R&B singer sent a message to fans in March via his private Facebook page in which he indicated that he'd heard some of his labelmate's new recordings. "Trust me, it's so monolithic it'll shake you in your shoes!" he wrote.

Sade's 2000 release, "Lovers Rock," sold 3,881,000 copies in the U.S. and the prior album, 1992's "Love Deluxe," sold 3,407,000. Since 1985's "Diamond Life" debut, Sade has sold nearly 17 million units in the U.S. alone according to Nielsen SoundScan.
