Alleged Rihanna Photo Leaked; Killer Returned To Crime Scene; Ministers To Urge Burris Resignation
(Friday, 20 February 2009) The LAPD is probing the apparent leak of a photo of Rihanna's injuries; Atlanta Police track an alleged killer when he returns to the scene of the crime; pastors who supported Roland Burris now say he should step down. Details, and the alleged Rihanna picture, are on KISS News Now!
- Unlike an obviously Photoshopped e-mail that went out last week, this picture of an injured Rihanna looks legit. The LAPD has launched an internal investigation after a celebrity website posted the picture, in which the woman has welts and bruising over each eye, bruising on her face, and a puffy lip which looks like it had been bleeding. The Los Angeles Police Department says the photo has the appearance of the one they took the night 19-year-old Chris Brown was accused of attacking a woman. They want to know how celebrity stalker site TMZ.com got the photograph, and say someone could be fired for leaking the picture.
- Atlanta Police say the accused robber and killer of a woman at the Aqua Midtown condos may have come back to her place to clean her out. Cops say after Shamal Thompson went on a shopping spree at Atlantic Station and Lenox, he went back to Aqua--where suspicious security turned him away, wrote down his license plate and called police. Thompson was picked up three hours later. Atlanta Police Lt. Keith Meadows, who heads up the department's homicide unit, says, "He was extremely brazen. It's a little unsettling when people are that bold." The 22-year-old suspect also goes by the name "Jamal Thompson."
- Gwinnett County police are stepping up patrols near Collins High School, after a man allegedly walked onto campus and tried to drag away two female students Thursday morning. Police haven't released the suspect's name, but they have warrants out for him on simple battery and criminal trespass charges. The Collins High principal sent out a letter to parents about the incident.
- A former DeKalb County police detective gets three years probation for stealing cash and lottery tickets during vice raids of convenience stores. Anthony Robinson pleaded guilty to violating his oath of office. He was caught on video grabbing the merchandise and money.
- A group of black ministers who supported Roland Burris' efforts to get into the US Senate now say they'll join the chorus calling for his resignation. A pastor tells the Associated Press that their decision comes after revelations that Burris raised money for then-Governor Rod Blagojevich, who was seeking to profit off the open Senate seat.
- TI is headed to court--but he's handling a different kind of legal business. As part of his 1,000 hours community service for a federal weapons charge, he'll be speaking to teenagers today at the Georgia Supreme Court. TI is scheduled to be sentenced next month for trying to buy automatic weapons and silencers.
- It's the last weekend for what critics say is likely the smash hit of the season at the Alliance Theatre--Jesus Christ Superstar Gospel. The show features an Atlanta choir, Georgians Darryl Jovan Williams, Nicole Long and Keith Adams, as well as Broadway star Darius de Haas, as Jesus. The show's such a hit, there is buzz a Broadway or even European tour should be in its future.
- Eight months after wincing and wobbling on one good leg to win the US Open, Tiger Woods says he's ready to play again. He'll play the Accenture match in Tucson next weekend and probably two more events before the Masters in Augusta.
- In a nod to the shoddy economy, Six Flags is dropping its season pass prices--$20 lower than last year. The park also plans a February opening--the earliest in its 42-year history.
- In KISS news about your health: the number of fast-food restaurants in your neighborhood could up your risk of stroke! University of Michigan researcher Dr. Lewis Morgenstern says for each fast food place nearby, your stroke risk goes up one percent--but acknowledges that other factors--like crime, a lack of healthy food choices like whole grains and vegetables, or a lack of nearby parks for exercise--could play a role in increasing the risk. In other words, they don't know if it's the food, or if fast food joints are simply a marker of unhealthy neighborhoods. The National Restaurant Association calls the study "seriously flawed."
- DeKalb County Police Chief Terrell Bolton, already on leave during a probe of his use of comp time, is asking for two more weeks off because of his health problems. Bolton was recently diagnosed with diabetes.
- The Oscars are this weekend. Viola Davis and Taraji P. Henson are both nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award.
- The New York Post apologizes for the cartoon which shows officers having killed a chimp and suggesting that it was the author of the economic stimulus plan. But they say Reverend Al Sharpton is using the comic for publicity and their apology doesn't extend to him.
- Speaking of the actual gunned-down chimp, we've learned that the animal's owner bathed with Travis, let him brush her hair and cuddled up with him in bed at night. Police say he could've viewed his owner's visiting friend as an intruder on his territory.
- The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: sunshine and a breezy high of 47 Friday, low of 30 tonight. Saturday, mostly sunny and a breezy high of 60 with a 30% chance of nighttime drizzle.
