Another Student Robbed; Nixon On Abortion & Women; Titans' Johnson Wants TD Celebration Ideas
(Wednesday, 24 June 2009) Another college student is robbed near the Georgia Tech campus; new tapes and documents show President Nixon thought abortion was acceptable to prevent biracial births; a Tennessee Titan wants you to Tweet him some ideas on how to celebrate his next touchdowns. Details on today's KISS News Now!
- A college student stuck up at gunpoint runs for his life as armed robbers threaten to shoot him. It's apparently the fourth such assault in three days near the campus of Georgia Tech. About 1:00 a.m., University of Phoenix student Eric Mills was walking and talking on the phone at the same apartment complex where a student wsa held up the night before. The masked crooks demanded his cell phone, even after he threw his bookbag with his laptop onto the ground. When he tried to run, the one with the gun threatened to shoot him. The crooks only left when other cars started to show up.
- A 68-year-old Walton County woman pistol-whipped along with her husband in a home invasion last month has died. Two 18-year-olds and a 28-year-old are now facing murder charges for Epsie Ewing's death. They attacked the pair after claiming to be interested in buying the couple's truck.
- Newly released tapes from the Nixon Library reveal that in 1973, President Nixon talked to then-Republican National Chair George H. W. Bush about trying to recruit pretty women to run for Congress here in the South, after he noticed a couple in the South Carolina legislature.
"Let's look for some,'' he said. "And understand, I don't do it because I'm for women. But I'm doing it because [a] woman might win some place where a man might not.'' Yet, a letter Nixon penned shows him solidly endorsing the Equal Rights Amendment, saying that for 20 years, "I have not altered my belief that equal rights for women warrant a constitutional guarantee.''
Another tape reveals that despite his public opposition to abortion, Nixon told a special counsel that it may sometimes be necessary in the case of a multiracial pregnancy--or a rape.
Speaking to aide Charles Colson after the January 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion, the president said: "I admit, there are times when abortions are necessary. I know that.'' He gave "When you have a black and a white'' as an example.
"Or rape,'' Colson offered. "Or rape,'' Nixon agreed. - South Carolina's wayward governor is supposed to be back at the state capitol today. Mark Sanford took off last week, and his aides claimed he'd been hiking the Appalachian Trail--but a Greenville station reported his state car spotted at the Atlanta airport. The GOP governor now reportedly says he changed his mind at the last minute about going hiking, instead taking off to Argentina for a few days. Asked by The State newspaper why his staff would tell the public he was on the Trail, Sanford said, "I don't know."
- Jon and Kate Plus 8 is on hiatus while the Gosselin couple work out their living arrangments and new show shooting schedule. Monday night the TLC reality TV couple announced they're divorcing after 10 years of marriage.
- Gwinnett County commissioners sign off on a study to see if a controversial toll road plan is what residents really need. The plan would cut commute times by making Ronald Reagan Parkway a tol road and linking it with I-85.
- A woman in California stops a bank robbery at a grocery store by putting the guy in a chokehold. When the manager started yelling that a guy with a gun was robbing them, one customer started scuffling with him and Cyndi Orel--who's 5'7", 128 pounds--put him in a sleeper hold and knocked him out. Turns out Orel's a retired cop--but she never got to catch a bank robber while on the job.
- Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson is asking his Twitter followers for ideas on how to celebrate touchdowns even better than Terrell Owens and Chad OchoCinco. Johnson drew a $10,000 fine last fall for celebrating a 66-yard TD run in Kansas City by banging on drums in the end zone. And should any fan that provides the perfect inspiration be expected to help pay any fine? Johnson says no.
"If it's better than T.O. or Ochocinco, I'll pay the fine," Johnson said. - Investigators request the cell phone records of a DC Metro train operator to see if she was distracted before the crash. There's evidence she tried to use the emergency brake. Still, the main focus is now on why the computer system which keeps trains apart failed to stop one from slamming into another one stopped on the tracks.
- Still waiting for your Georgia income tax refund? State officials say they're making progress on a huge backlog, but it could be mid-August before all the paper returns are processed. E-filers get their returns much faster, usually within a week or less. If your refund isn't postmarked by July 15, the state owes you interest--but Revenue Commissioner Bart Graham says that will come in a separate check...later.
- The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: today and tomorrow, mostly sunny with lower humidity; highs around 93, lows around 71.

What others are saying
- Another Student Robbed at GA TechThese heinous crimes are being committed by very young disenfranchised black boys and not only against students at GA Tech, but also other campuses in Atlanta (GA State, etc.). Police officials do not want this information to get out because it affects the public relations of Atlanta, as many organizations come here for conventions, meetings, etc.
I am not a big Chief Pennington fan, because one, he's from New Orleans and New Orleans has always been a haven for criminals and gangs. So he came here based on what accomplishments? Atlanta inherited some great folks from New Orleans, don't get me wrong, but we also inherited a huge criminal element who have not problem with violating people and property. Just check the criminal stats since Hurrican Katrina.
Black men need to step up to the plate and put their feet down on this, it is out of control. Blame it on the economy, drugs and gangs, but let us also point the finger at our community because our sons are lost. We are letting a generation of boys as young as 10 - 17 get flushed into the legal system, because we refuse to take action.
It is so ironic that in the election year of President Barack Obama one of the most intelligent US Presidents in history, that young black men are literally losing their minds, shooting and robbing people of cell phones and petty cash. They don't feel that they have a future anyway and have lost hope, so they don't care. Only to be sent to prison for years to come, some for a lifetime. And what do parents, especially black me do? We just roll over and go to sleep.
We need to pray to God that this turns around!
