Atlanta 2nd Least Safe City; Two DeKalb Officers Fired
- The newest FBI crime statistics indicate Atlanta is the second least safe city in America. The per-capita crime rate here is listed at 16%, and only Memphis scored higher. New York City is the nation's safest with a per-capita crime rate just over 4%. The stats show violent crime in Atlanta dropped in 2008, but property crimes were up.
- Another parent's in trouble for allegedly covering up a child's involvement in a fatal accident. A pedestrian in his late 40s was hit walking along Sandtown Road early Sunday morning in Marietta. The impact threw the man onto the hood of the Olds, then into a ditch as the car drove away. Police later arrested Jonathan Corona and charged his mother, Maria Agullon, with trying to cover for him. Both could have a first court appearance today.
- Atlanta Police say they don't expect to file charges against the driver who hit a six-year-old boy Saturday, badly injuring him. The boy ran into traffic on Hollowell Parkway near Commodore Drive--right in front of a man's '86 Ford LTD. The driver stopped on the scene and has cooperated with investigators. The boy, whose name hasn't been released, is fighting for his life at Children's Healthcare at Egleston, where he is listed in "very grave condition."
- Two DeKalb County police officers have been fired for sexual misconduct. Gregory Rivera and Corey Lowe-Williams were fired after an investigation revealed Rivera allegedly visited an off-duty Lowe-Williams at her home, and on at least one occasion made a recruit he was supposed to be training wait for him in the patrol car.
- More than a third of Americans now use what conventional medicine calls "unproven" remedies--everything from energy fields to quartz crystals. Dr. Richard Dutton, Chief of Anaesthesia at the University of Maryland Hospital Shock Trauma Unit says invisible energy fields have helped his patients. A new AP survey finds no actual cures from such treatments, despite 10 years and $2.5 billion in research.
- DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis doesn't like the way the layoff notices at the county development office were handled. He wants the more than 100 employees to report to work today, even though most were told Friday to clean out their desks. There's just not enough work for them all. Ellis says he wants to review the decision.
- A 6-year-old Commerce boy is dead, his grandfather charged with the killing. Suspect Robert Clark's rage spilled over to include his wife and police officers. He and his wife are in serious condition at Grady Hospital.
- A city commission will decide this week about moving an African-American cemetery from Buckhead. The new owners of Mt. Olive Cemetery have applied for permission to move the graves.
- The city of Atlanta has just three months to fix problems with fire response. The deadline is months earlier than what fire officials mentioned last week. Atlanta's protection rating could drop from a two to a four. The rating is used to set insurance premiums.
