Melon Leads To Murder; Fired Chief To Appeal; $2,000 Reward For Shooting Info
- An apparent motive emerges in the killing of a 6-year-old Commerce boy. Police say Robert Clark may have shot his grandson to death because Michael Lavigne either dropped a piece of watermelon, or cut it wrong. Neighbors say they have often heard Clark yelling at his grandsons and using bad language. Michael's five-year-old brother, who was also at the home at the time, was not injured. Clark also shot his wife, and both are still hospitalized.
- Gas prices in metro Atlanta are flying high. Prices have gone up 11 cents in the past week, 46 cents in the past month. AAA says we could see $3 a gallon soon...and the prices are increasing without explanation, because consumption is actually down.
- The Jonesboro police chief fired for wearing blue jeans to work will appeal to the Clayton County Superior Court after the city council voted not to reinstate him. Brad Johnson's attorney says the chief's ouster stems from his clashing with Mayor Luther Maddox on a personnel issue--not denim. He points out that Johnson was sworn in as chief while wearing jeans--and he has the picture to prove it.
- Guests of a house party in Paulding County are stonewalling detectives investigating a weekend shooting. Despite about 150 people attending the Saturday night party on Hillcrest Court in Hiram, no one has spoken up about who may have shot 18-year-old Gregory Frasier--or why. He was airlifted to the hospital after being shot in the chest. Crimestoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for tips.
- Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin takes issue with a blog's ranking of the city as the second most dangerous in the country. Mayor Franklin says the ranking ignores "the city's seven-year track record of crime reduction." The website simply took the latest FBI statistics on per-capita crime and ranked them, which landed Atlanta behind only Memphis. But even the FBI's website discourages people from using the numbers to rank or measure the effectiveness of law enforcement.
- An outbreak of vandalism has residents in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs worried and outraged. Police say swastikas and/or phallic symbols were painted on one home's car, another's door.
- Black, Latino and Asian lawmakers today plan to call attention to disparities reported in medical treatment as President Barack Obama works on the health care overhaul. The lawmakers plan a news conference on Capitol Hill to introduce legislation to improve services in low-income areas.
- The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: partly sunny, high of 89, lows 64-70.
