Bond Granted For Cracker Barrel Suspect; Tears At 'This Is It' Premieres; Sex For World Series Tix?
A judge grants a high bond for the man accused in a racist beating outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant; fans greet Michael Jackson's movie premiere with tears and applause; a Phillies fan is arrested after police say she offered sex for baseball tickets. All the details are on today's KISS News Now!
- A south Georgia man can go home as soon as he posts bond in the racially-charged beating of an Army reservist outside a Morrow Cracker Barrel. Troy West's bail has been set at $320,000; he's accused of attacking the woman after she cautioned him to be careful because he'd almost hit her seven-year-old daughter with the restaurant door. His lawyer, Tony Axam, argued Tasha Hill threatened his client and spit on him. West's pastor, however, was asked on the stand whether there was any situation in which "a man that large needs to strike a woman that size," and he said no. The judge told West to stay out of Clayton County except when he comes to court or if he's passing through on I-75.
- A 15-year-old is charged with shooting a Chinese restaurant owner who was delivering takeout in DeKalb County. Police are trying to find out whether Qiu Xiufang may have been lured to the Highland Run East complex, but they're not sure whether the teen made the call or if it was a crime of opportunity. They think robbery was the motive. The 46-year-old has been targeted before--beaten up while making a recent delivery. More arrests are expected in the case.
- Four people were treated at the hospital for neck and back pain, as the IHOP Restaurant on the East West Connector in Austell becomes a drive-through. An elderly woman was trying to pull into a handicapped parking space when she hit the gas instead of the brakes--and smashed through the wall, hitting diners in a booth.
- More than $17,000 worth of high-end True Religion denim is on the hot market of Atlanta following the latest blue jean bandits caper. Dunwoody police say five young men took just five seconds to get in and out of the Bloomingdale's at Perimeter Mall, snatching up at least 30 pairs of jeans and 20 t-shirts and running out to a maroon Taurus station wagon with drive-out tags. Cops are looking at store security video, hoping the pictures help identify the thieves.
- From Atlanta to New York to Los Angeles, many Michael Jackson fans cried during the midnight premieres of "This Is It" last night. The mood was celebratory and maybe a bit sad, too, at many theaters. The 50-year-old Jackson, who died in June, was easily keeping pace with his young backup dancers during rehearsals for such hits as "Beat It," "Human Nature," "Thriller" and "Billie Jean." Many moviegoers applauded each song as if it was a live concert. Performances include a medley of Jackson 5 hits, and segments revealed elaborate plans for the marathon 50-show concert comeback like a grand stage entrance inside a mechanical spider. Critics' early reviews have been positive.
Film and tour director Kenny Ortega says he feels Michael Jackson's spirit guided him as he was editing the movie, and that it was an emotional time as he realized how immportant it would be for Jackson's fans to see his final moments: "This is sacred. This is the last documentation of Michael Jackson in his last, final theatrical work. Get it together, man. The journey is not over!" Ortega says he still cries four times a day. - Federal regulators ground the pilots of a Northwest Airlines jet that overshot the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles. The FAA revoked the licenses of Timothy Cheney and Richard Cole, who told investigators they were using their laptop computers during last week's flight from San Diego when they lost track of time and place for some 90 minutes. The agency says the pilots engaged in reckless conduct.
- A 68-year-old paraplegic woman is dead, and her 79-year-old husband in custody following a shooting at their home on Graymont Drive. Atlanta Police say while they don't have a motive, they think the shooting of Rochelle Phillips, a wheelchair-bound diabetic, was a mercy killing. Her 50-year-old son struggled with his stepfather for the gun, and got shot in the neck. He's critical but stable at Grady.
- The World Series opens tonight. What would you do to be a part of it? One very loyal Phillies fan placed an ad on Craigslist:
"Diehard Phillies fan - gorgeous tall buxom blonde - in desperate need of two World Series Tickets. Price negotiable - I'm the creative type! Maybe we can help each other!"
An undercover cop posing as a ticketholder arranged to meet her at a bar, where she allegedly confirmed she'd have sex for two tickets to a game. Then, 43-year-old Susan Finkelstein was arrested for misdemeanor solicitation; her Facebook status update later was: "Susan Finkelstein is wondering about the integrity of the police." - DNA cracks a 10-year-old cold case in Clayton County. A 13-year-old girl was raped by a masked intruder who broke into her family's home in 1999; DNA matches a 35-year-old Valdosta prison inmate, Michael Bernard, who is serving time on an unrelated case.
- Three men have been arrested in connection with the October 18 fight that led to the stabbing death of University of Connecticut football player Jasper Howard. The attorney for one man charged with murder says his client was trying to break up the fight.
- Legislation to extend unemployment benefits for out-of-work Americans is headed to the floor of the Senate after clearing a procedural hurdle. The legislation would provide 14 weeks in extra financial aid for everyone. In states like Georgia where unemployment is over 8.5%, it would mean six more weeks of benefits on top of the 14.
- The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: morning fog and drizzle, then increasing sunshine and a high of 71. Wednesday night's lows, 49-55. Thursday, mostly to partly cloudy, high 74; Friday, mostly cloudy with a 30% percent chance of showers, with a breezy high of 70.
