King Children Battle In Court; Granny Goes On Trial; Listen To Michael Jackson's Newest Song On Today's KISS News Now!
- Their father won the Nobel Peace Prize, but the children remain locked in battle. Today in Fulton County, they'll start picking a jury in the civil trial of the King children. Bernice and Martin III are suing brother Dexter, saying he used some of the money from their father's estate's corporation for his personal use. Dexter is countersuing to get some of their mother's personal papers he wanted to use in a book deal. A judge urged them to reach a settlement, but they couldn't agree, so a jury will work it out for them.
- A Newton County commissioner is free on bond after his weekend arrest on battery charges. Covington Police arrived at District 4 Commissioner J. C. Henderson's house on a report of a domestic dispute Saturday night; they tell Channel 2 Action News that Henderson's wife was bleeding from a swollen lip.
- A grandmother goes on trial in Clayton County for allegedly covering up her daughter's near-starvation of her infant twin sons. ChristiannZzelek was teaching an early childhood development class at Union Grove High School in Henry County when she was arrested. Prosecutors say when she found her twin grandsons' parents passed out on drugs, she called 911 for them--but had a relative take away the malnourished 13-month-old boys before cops and DFCS got there. The boys weighed barely 9 pounds at a year old. Their mother, Tessa Zelek, was convicted at trial and is expected to be sentenced this week.
- The wait is over. Michael Jackson's never-before-released song "This Is It" was released at midnight on michaeljackson.com. A two-disc album comes out October 26, two days before the movie. Jackson's brothers are singing background vocals.
- With municipal elections just weeks away, the Atlanta Journal Constitution is doing away with a heritage feature of newspapers. The AJC will no longer endorse political candidates. The paper's editorial editor Andre Jackson says readers have let them know that in this day and age, they don't need the paper to tell them how to vote anymore.
- Chanting phrases including "Out of the closet, into the streets" and "Hey, Obama, let mama marry mama," tens of thousands of gay rights supporters marched in Washington Sunday, urging President Barack Obama to keep his promise to let gays serve openly in the military. Speakers included NAACP Chairman Julian Bond, who firmly linked the gay rights struggle to the civil rights movement.
- The Rev. Joseph Lowery celebrated his 88th birthday with a little help from his friends, including soul legend Aretha Franklin and actor Samuel L. Jackson. The star-studded tribute was last night at Morehouse.
- The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: overcast, with fog and rain likely, and a high around 65; a low of 55 tonight.
