Teen Jailed For Bank Robberies; Chris Henry Dies; Fort Valley Suspends Alphas; Breast Flasher Hit By Car; New GA Jobs
A high school boy is accused of being a serial bank robber; Chris Henry succumbs to injuries he received falling off a truck; the Alpha Phi Alpha chapter at Fort Valley has been suspended for five years; Tiger Woods is voted AP's Athlete of the Decade; Vice-President Biden's federal stimulus dollars announcement today could mean thousands of new jobs. - A Clayton County teenager is an accused serial bank robber. The 16-year-old is jailed without bond and has been linked to at least three bank robberies in Forest Park, Morrow and Marietta. Marietta Police say he held up a BB&T branch with a demand note last month, and that he is suspected in bank robberies in Morrow and Forest Park. Other arrests could be forthcoming, as authorities suspect other teens may have been involved.
- A holiday present from Citigroup: the bank is halting the evictions of 4,000 families facing foreclosure until after the new year. They're challenging other banks to do the same.
- Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry has died, one day after falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities described as a domestic dispute with his fiancee. The 26-year-old was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being found on a residential road. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the dispute began at a home about a half-mile away, and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.
- The Alphas are off the yard at Fort Valley State for the next five years. The university has suspended Alpha Phi Alpha for the next half-decade for hazing, and suspended intake for all Greek groups until they attend a risk management class. A 19-year-old was taken to the hospital with back injuries and kidney failure after being beaten at the frat house. 21-year-old Bryson Amey was charged with felony assault.
- Tiger Woods, who set a record with 64 tournament victories, is named the Associated Press Athlete of the Decade. More than half the ballots were cast after his serial cheating was revealed. People Magazine reports Elin Woods has decided to file for divorce and take their two kids to Sweden.
- Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Jon Babineaux apologizes to fans, family, teammates, Arthur Blank and Coach Smith for "being a distraction." Babineuax's facing a felony marijuana possession charge for having one-and-a-half ounces after being pulled over in Gwinnett County last week. Police say he was smoking weed while driving with a friend.
- A Coweta County man is accused of having sex with the teen he was adopting. Channel 2 Action News reports 44-year-old Raymond Chapman of Newnan is jailed without bond, after allegedly having a sexual relationship with the girl both before and during the adoption process. Chapman and his wife have been fired from the Georgia Baptist Children's Home in Palmetto.
- No vacancies allowed at the hotel, but the Clermont Lounge is still open for business. Fulton County health inspectors found a slew of violations at the aging hotel on Ponce: dirty bedding, bed bugs, mold and broken toilets. It's now under new ownership after the lender foreclosed. Tenants have to move out by the end of the year, but the strip club is still shimmying along.
- Some good news and bad news in Fulton County's new budget: the 2010 plan does not increase property taxes, but all county workers will take a 4% pay cut, and the county will likely slash 300 jobs.
- A Wilmington, North Carolina woman has been charged with keeping the corpse of her elderly mother in their home for months--perhaps since May. The body was discovered in bed. Amy Stewart is charged with concealing a death.
- The Fulton County coroner is trying to track down the next of kin for dozens of sets of cremated remains from a defunct funeral home. A bankruptcy trustee says Sellers Brothers left nearly 100 boxes of cremains in several storage lockers in East Point when they went out of business--and that some of them have been there for 25 years.
- An 18-year-old New Zealand girl is charged with disorderly conduct for flashing drivers. The teen was standing in the middle of the road, flashing her breasts at passing cars--when one driver got so distracted, he ran right into her. She rolled onto the hood, cracking the windshield, but was only slightly hurt. Adding insult to injury, the teen flasher got a $200 fine. The prosecutor called her crime "stupidity in the extreme."
- The House works late into the night to pass a job creation bill; it combines about $50 billion for public works and almost another $50 bilion for state and local governments strapped for cash. Not a single Republican voted for the measure; the Senate takes it up next year.
- As a new Associated Press-GFK poll finds 52% of Americans approve of the way President Obama is handling the Aghan war--up 10% from November--the president says the decision to send in more troops has hit him like a ton of bricks. Mr. Obama tells ABC News there was no way to anticipate the emotional impact of meeting the families of fallen soldiers and talking to troops who've come home with disabling injuires. The poll says 56% of Americans like the job President Obama is doing.
- Vice-President Joe Biden spends his lunch hour in Dawson County today. Governor Perdue joins the VP for the announcement that $33 million in federal stimulus dollars are coming to north Georgia. The money will create construction jobs to lay fiber optic lines, improving broadband connectivity for business growth. Residents, schools and businesses in the area have complained for years about the lack of high-speed Internet service. The North Georgia Network Cooperative estimates more than 800 "direct" and nearly 21,000 "indirect" jobs will be created byt the 260-mile project.
- A new warning from Alpharetta Police to businesses and holiday shoppers: beware of counterfeit cash. They're trying to track down whomever passed at least eight phony hundred-dollar bills at a store and restaurant. All of the bills had the same serial number.
- He's obese, snacks all the time, smokes and lives a sedentary lifestyle--unless he's engaging in dangerous sports like roof surfing and chimney jumping without a helmet. Who's the man an Australian public health expert calls a "reckless role model for impressionable children?" Santa Claus! The report is out today in the Christmas issue of the British medical journal BMJ.
