  • President Barack Obama is announcing beefed-up airline security measures after the botched Christmas Day terror attempt. He meets today with security advisers in an effort to find out who dropped the ball in allowing a Nigerian man with suspected terrorist ties to board a Northwest flight to Detroit.

  • Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed takes the oath of office to become the capital city's 59th mayor. Reed says his top priority in his first year is to find the money to hire more police and pay them wages allowing them to live in the city they serve and protect. The former state senator also says he will open every recreation center in Atlanta to give children the opportunities that he and the new city council president Ceasar Mitchell--both grads of high schools in Atlanta--had when they were young. In his inuguaral address, Reed revealed that he was coming into office with a commitment from Turner Broadcasting CEO Phil Kent that one dollar from every CNN tour would be donated to help open every recreation center in the city of Atlanta. "We'll have action, not words," Reed said to swelling applause.

  • The Secret Service acknowledges that a third univited guest made his way into the president's first state dinner in November. The Washington Post reports he's DC-area party promoter Carlos Allen, who tagged along with the Indian delegation.

  • Washington Wizards star Gilbert Arenas met with police Monday and told them that the incident in which he took unloaded guns and put them on display in his team's locker room was his "misguided effort to play a joke" on a teammate. He says so in a written statement released after the interview. Still, two league officials have told a reporter that it really was a heated argument over an unpaid gambling debt, not just a prank gone bad. Arenas has apologized. No word yet how the league will discipline him. The NBA says it'll wait until the legal process is over before deciding.

  • A Georgia state senator wants to make it illegal for city cops to run radar or laser on interstates. Sponsor Mitch Seabaugh of Newnan contends cities are just trying to raise revenue. Georgia's new super speeder law, which tacks on an extra $200 fine to the most leadfooted among us, kicked in January 1.

  • Four Georgia colleges rank on the Kiplinger Personal Finance magazine list of the top 100 best values in the nation. In the number one slot is The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

  • He's narrated many movies and commercials; now, Morgan Freeman is the voice of the CBS Evening News. Freeman replaces Walter Cronkite, whose voiceover has been introducing Katie Couric since she began on the anchor desk in 2006. Cronkite died last July. A CBS spokesman says while Cronkite's voice was comforting, it is time to move forward.

  • He may not be talking to the media since word of his many extramarital affairs came out, but Tiger Woods is baring all--at least, baring his chest--on the cover of the newest issue of Vanity Fair magazine. The February issue hits newsstands nationwide next week, tomorrow in New York and Los Angeles. The shots were taken by celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz back in January of 2006. "Tiger is an intensely competitive athlete--and quite serious about his sport," Liebovitz says. "I wanted to reveal that in these photos." Not all of Tiger's sponsors are ditching him. Video game maker EA Sports is going ahead with plans to introduce an online game starring the world's #1 golfer. EA Sports President Peter Moore said the company decided to stick with Woods because he is "still one of the greatest athletes in history'' despite his "mistakes'' off the golf course. Woods announced last month that he would be taking an indefinite break from the sport to work on his marriage.

  • A major supplier of airline food is under fire by the FDA after inspectors found disgusting conditions at its Denver kitchen. The FDA says LSG Sky Chefs, which provides meals for Delta, American, United and others, had live and dead roaches "too numerous to count" in the Denver facility, and listeria bacteria.

  • Some DeKalb County school district employees are unhappy that the school board just voted school superintendent Dr. Crawford Lewis a $15,000 raise to a salary of $255,000. Lisa Morgan, a vice president with the Organization of DeKalb Educators, says it's unfair--noting teachers didn't get any raise, and some bus drivers had their pay cut. The bpard also extended Lewis' contract to 2013.

  • A dating website kicks out 5,000 members for packing on the pounds during the holidays. A spokesman for Beautifulpeople.com says members were upset to see other members looking heavier than their original profile pictures--and since the site has an image to maintain, they booted the offenders. The site says once the chubbies drop the weight, they can reapply for membership.
