DeKalb Superintendent Takes Leave; Dr. Lowery's African Ancestry; Sprite Step-Off Bumps 2nd-Place AKAs to 1st-Place 'Tie' (VIDEO)

  • Hours after police searched his home as part of an ongoing investigation into school construction projects bid tampering, DeKalb County's schools superintendent has temporarily stepped down. Dr. Crawford Lewis says he had no role in the alleged wrongdoing, and is cooperating fully. Police searched his Stone Mountain home Thursday, hauling out three computers and six boxes. Former COO Pat Pope is accused of steering business to her husband's architecture firm and to construction companies she knew.

  • African Ancestry.com is revealing the family tree of Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery. The company uses DNA from a painless cheek swab to trace genealogy, telling people from which African country and tribe their ancestors came. Company president Gina Paige tells KISS she's not surprised at the results for Dr. Lowery: "He's a very important and powerful spiritual leader in our community, and his ancestry definitely demonstrates that," says Paige. "So he came by it honestly and genetically." The company unveils the results Saturday at the Auburn Avenue Research Library, and will be selling the cheek-swab kits at a discounted price of $275 (down from $349).

  • Democrats and Republicans at President Obama's marathon health care summit found plenty of agreement--first and foremost, that the system needs fixing. But the devil is in the details, and that's where the partisan divide reared its ugly head in the 7.5-hour session. The president suggested Democrats will push ahead even if the GOP drags its feet.

  • After days of controversy over a white sorority's win in a step competition, sponsor Coca-Cola says the second-place AKA team from Indiana University will share top honors wih Zeta Tau Alpha of the University of Arkanasas Fayetteville for the Sprite Step-Off. They chalk it up to a "scoring discrepancy," but declined to give details on what the alleged scoring problem was. What's your reaction to the judging--and to the revamped results?   • A Toyota Corolla with a VIN putting it among the company's sticky gas pedals recall plowed into a Stone Mountain home Thursday after the driver said she couldn't make it stop. No one was injured, but the homeowner says he'll contact Toyota to see if it will pay for his repairs.

  • Republican gubernatorial hopeful Karen Handel says she has a solution to help Georgia's mounting budget woes: cut the state workforce by 10%. Handel says laying off nearly 8,000 Georgians would save $400 million.

  • Could Georgia's top two elected officials be a husband/wife pair? The wife of Georgia gubernatorial candidate DuBose Porter says she's planning to run for lieutenant governor. Carol Porter is the first Democrat to enter the race for the state's second-highest office. GOP incumbent Casey Cagle says he's seeking re-election.

  • Gracious winners? The Canadian women's hockey team let loose in celebrating their Olympics gold 2-0 victory over Team USA--by coming back onto the ice, while smoking cigars and swigging champagne and beer. One even tried to drive the ice-resurfacing machine. The celebration raised eyebrows at the IOC, which said it's looking into the matter.

  • Howard Stern is putting on a beauty pageant for Tiger Woods' mistresses. So far, four of them have agreed to participate in categories including swimsuit, personality and talent. The prize is $100,000 from the dating service Ashley Madison.com--whose slogan is, "Life's short. Have an affair."

  • What's that smell? The Girl Scout cookies? The bakery that makesthe Lemon Chalet Cremes says customers have been complaining of a weird scent and taste. The Little Brownie Bakers website chalks it up to the oil they used breaking down--and says while the cookies are safe, they're not up to their quality standards and so are recalling the affected batches.

  • The KISS 104.1 weather forecast: partly sunny, windy and a high of 48, lows 24-27. Saturday and Sunday, mostly sunny, highs around 51.
