Prius and Lexus Top Toyota Recall

More than 130,000 Prius cars and nearly 15,000 Lexus vehicles in the United States are among those that Toyota is recalling to fix a brake problem. The new recalls bring to 8.5 million the number of vehicles recalled around the world by Toyota, because of problems involving the brakes and the gas pedals.

Congressional investigators are looking into whether the government missed warning signs about acceleration problems in Toyota vehicles. State Farm, the largest auto insurer in the U.S., says it alerted federal regulators in 2007 about an increase in reports of unexpected acceleration. Meanwhile, Toyota is announcing the recall of 437,000 Prius and other hybrid vehicles around the world to fix brake problems.

DeKalb County's School Superintendent finds himself defending his $15,000 pay raise at a time when his teachers are facing furloughs. Dozens of parents and teachers protested outside Monday's school board meeting. They want his raise cut from the school system's budget because the budget also cuts student programs like pre-kindergarten and art. Dr. Crawford Lewis will earn $255,000 in 2010.

Powerful winds and snow are expected to hit the mid-Atlantic states by this afternoon -- bringing as much as 20 inches of new snow around Washington, D.C., and nearly as much in Philadelphia. The region is still digging out from as much as 3 feet of snow that fell over the weekend.

U.N. officials say about a dozen hospitals in Haiti have started charging patients for medicine. And they say they will cut off shipments of free medicine beginning immediately to any Haitian hospitals that are doing so. After last month's catastrophic quake, authorities immediately decided to make all medical care free.

Little more than a week ago, Lil Wayne was reinforcing his place in rap's pantheon with a commanding performance at the Grammy Awards ceremony. His latest album, ``Rebirth,'' was officially released Feb. 2.
Now Lil Wayne, one of music's biggest sellers and rap's hottest stars, is poised to spend as much as the next year in a jail cell instead of a spotlight. The Grammy-winning rapper was due to be sentenced Tuesday afternoon after pleading guilty in a gun possession case. His plea deal calls for a year in jail, though good behavior could shave that to as little as eight months.

Michael Jackson's doctor returns to court in April to find out the date for the next major step in the case a proceeding that will reveal for the first time the evidence the prosecution believes will show his ``gross negligence'' was the direct cause of the pop star's death. Dr. Conrad Murray pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter and a judge released him on $75,000 bail.

Andre Leon Talley will help crown "America's Next Top Model.'' The over-the-top 60-year-old Vogue editor-at-large will join Tyra Banks, photographer Nigel Barker and a weekly guest judge on the panel of the 14th season of the CW modeling competition (premiering March 10 at 8 p.m. EST), the network announced Monday. Previous "Top Model'' judges have included runway coach J. Alexander and supermodel Janice Dickinson. Talley, a veteran fashionista, is a regular in the front row at fashion shows in New York, Paris, London and Milan.

Stocks are still higher in morning trading, as investors shrug off a steep drop in wholesale inventories. Economists had expected a gain, but the government says businesses cut inventories by 0.8 percent. Helping boost stocks today are hopes that the European Union will help Greece with its increasing debt burden.
