Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Civil Rights Leader, Doctor, Minister, Human Rights Activist. Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize 1964 and Presidential Medal of Freedom before being assassinated in 1968. For his promotion of non-violence and racial equality, he is considered a peacemaker by many people around the world.
Coretta Scott King
Coretta Scott King was one of the most influential women leaders in our world. Prepared by her family, education, and personality for a life committed to social justice and peace, she entered the world stage in 1955 as wife of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and as a leading participant in the American Civil Rights Movement.
Ralph D. Abernathy
Civil rights activist and leader and a close associate of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Following King's assassination, Abernathy took up the leadership of the SCLC Poor People's Campaign and led the march on Washington, D.C.
Andrew Young
Civil Rights Activist, U.S. Congressman, Minister, U.S. Ambassador, and two-term Atlanta Mayor.
John Lewis
Civil Rights Activist, Congressman, John Lewis has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Martin Luther King, Jr. Non-Violent Peace Prize. Congressman Lewis currently serves as a Chief Deputy Democratic Whip. He was first appointed to this position in 1991.
Hosea Williams
Civil Rights Activist, Philantropist, Chemist, and statesman, Hosea Williams recruited to the staff of Martin Luther King, organized the "Bloody Sunday" March which lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Reverend James Orange
Civil rights activist who served in numerous labor and civil rights organizations, notably as state chair of the People's Agenda for Voter Empowerment, working in voter education and registration drives throughout Georgia.
Reverend J. Lowery
Civil rights activist, NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award and the Martin Luther King Center Peace Award recipient. Essence has twice named him as one of the Fifteen Greatest Black Preachers.
Xernona Clayton
By the early 1960s, she was organizing fund raising events for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference which led her to work with Dr. and Mrs. Martin Luther King, Jr. By 1968, she became the first black woman in the South to host a regularly scheduled prime-time talk show.
Maynard Jackson
First African-American Mayor in City of Atlanta, serving three terms. Instrumental in development of Atlanta's rapid rail system, MARTA. Was dedicated to instituting affirmative action programs wherever possible in the city, with a special emphasis on minority contracting
Shirley Franklin
Shirley Clarke Franklin is the 58th mayor of Atlanta, and was the first female to hold the post and became the first black woman to be elected mayor of any major Southern city. Franklin is the fourth black mayor of Atlanta, the latest in a line of African American mayors that stretches back to 1974.
Rosemary Cloud
Rosemary Roberts Cloud is Fire Chief for the City of East Point, Georgia, and the first African American Female Fire Chief in the United States. In her position, she is responsible for managing four fire stations and 100 employees, in a city with 40,000 residents.
